I have about 16 or so motion lamps, mostly made by the Econolite Corporation in the 50's and 60's. The outer shade is stationary, with a colorful scene on it. The heat from the light bulb spins an inner cylindrical shade with a pattern on it that gives the effect of motion on the outer shade. Hopefully that makes sense! They are really quite amazing, and mesmerizing. When I was about 5 years old I saw my first motion lamp at a relatives house (Mel and Olive's place) and I was immediately hooked. For the longest time I never really knew what they were, as all I had was a vague (yet powerful) memory of a lamp that had a magical waterfall on it. Finally, about 15 years ago I described the vision to a shop owner here in Seattle, Ruby Montana, and she immediately knew what I was talking about. Over the years she found me just about every lamp I own. Thanks Ruby!
I'll add more as we go.
